The Importance of Premarital Counseling

Premarital counseling can help couples improve their relationship before marriage by encouraging the strengthening of communication skills, setting realistic expectations for marriage, and developing conflict resolution skills. Premarital counseling can also help couples establish a positive outlook about seeking help while they are married. Some topics that are normally addressed in premarital counseling are: time spent together, dealing with anger, finances, communication, beliefs and values, roles in marriage, affection and sex, desire to have children, family relationships, and decision-making.

Is Premarital Counseling Effective?

Premarital counseling can be effective in strengthening the relationship which will in turn strengthen the marriage. The couple is better able to understand one other strengths and weaknesses, work through current problems, and learn how to operate as a unit. Premarital counseling is only as effective as the amount of time and effort that each partner puts into it.
